Northwest Elementary is a PreK through 8th grade school in the Cocke County School District. Built in 1975, the Patriots have a legacy of preparing students for high school and beyond. Northwest has been updated in the past two years, resulting in a surge in test scores, improved overall behavior, and increasing enrollment. We are certainly "On a Quest to be the Best!"
We have several special programs at Northwest:
Blended Preschool - This paid preschool program has the lowest teacher/student ratio in the county. Approximately 15 students with both regular and special needs learn together with a special education teacher, a pre-school teacher, an assistant, a nurse, and several special educators, like speech teachers, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
Positive Behavior Supports - Staff has developed student expectations that are specifically taught to every child. Students are rewarded for their POSITIVE behavior and DISCIPLINED for their inappropriate behavior.
Reading Rocks - Reading program funded by Save the Children to help struggling readers catch up to grade level.
Math and Reading Intervention - Specialists pull struggling students for a half an hour each day for specific, small group instruction.
Comprehensive Developmental Classrooms - Classrooms staffed by Special Education Teacher and three teaching assistants for students with moderate to severe special needs.
Helen Ross McNabb In-school Counseling Services - Licensed professional counselors work in the school to help children with their social and emotional needs.
Safety Patrol, Honors Club, Band, Scholar's Bowl, Girls Volleyball and Basketball, Boys Basketball, Cheerleading, Music, Art, PE.
